Winter Dreams and Their Shadows

I look out my window

and see all the naked trees

and snow making summer invisible.

The pond appears as a champagne slush.

I'm thinking of a hot toddy.  People are

walking with their half frozen shadows;

but they're still resilient enough to bounce back

into step and follow like a puppy follows.

I'll take a nap of sorts with today's newspaper

over my face.  And surmise winter's end when

I will awake under pages of sepia memories.
