YOU CANNOT GO BACK

Age constructs its labyrinths -
You cannot go back to the dawning of your love
Back to when you were so bliss-imbued you believed your
bones had been exchanged with the saccharine veins of maple

Time is not a lullaby of bells and tick tocks
It is that devoted warden rattling with keys
Locking away each culmination of spring into memory

Love is like jazz
Improvised and intangible
Impermanent
Each riff like a snowflake, never occurring twice

You cannot go back to the sable darkness
Where you consummated your devotion

You cannot flutter backwards through the years
To the place where your heart was born
